Kevin Jarrett, M.B.E.

Maestro Kevin Jarrett is New Zealand’s Mr Brass Bands. No one has a record of service, dedication and performance achievement that our Kevin does. His accomplishments are so vast I am at risk of missing something important and I apologise if I have.
Began playing in Feilding in 1943.
Joined Queen Alexandra’s Own Band 1953.
Studied in Wanganui for 7 years under Captain Ernie Webb (Conductor of Queen Alexandra’s Own Band).
N.Z. Amateur Cornet Champion 1957 and 1980.
N.Z. Veterans’ Champion 1991. Australian Open Cornet Champion 1964.
Principal Cornet, New Zealand Army Band for many years during the 1960s and 1970s.
N.Z. Open Cornet Champion 1970.
Australian Trumpet Champion 1988.
Assistant Principal Cornet National Band of New Zealand 1962.
Principal Cornet and Leader National Band of New Zealand 1965, 1967, 1970, 1974. Solo Cornet 1978, 1985.
Musical Director of the National Youth Band 1977, 1978, 1982.
Musical Director of the National Band of New Zealand 1989, 1990, 1992, 1995.
Adjudicator in Australia 20 times.
Musical Director of Wanganui City Brass 1975-2000.
With Wanganui City Brass, won Australia Band A Grade Championships 1985 and tied New Zealand A Grade Championships 1998 but relegated to 2nd on a count-back.
Director of Education for BBANZ for many years.

Tony Cowan

.
 

 

Tony began his playing with Queen Alexandra’s Own Band in 1948.
He was in the band on flugel that won the N.Z. A Grade Championship in 1959. Joined the New Zealand Army Band in 1963.
National Band of New Zealand on tenor horn in 1967 and 1974.
1976 and 1978 he was the Drum Major, winning a World Championship in 1978. By this stage, Tony had established an unparalleled reputation in marching. Amongst other achievements, he was also responsible for the marching display and ceremonials at the opening of the 1974 Commonwealth Games in Christchurch.
In total, he won 5 A Grade marching titles, 3 B Grade titles and trained another 6 bands to championship wins, especially with Skellerup Woolston and various Wanganui bands once he retired from the Army, returning here in 1975.
Most recently, Tony trained Brass Wanganui to win the B Grade Marching Championship in Napier in 2009.
Tony is still playing regularly with the Brass Wanganui Auxiliary, these days on euphonium.
