About Us

Brass Wanganui is a very active B Grade brass band in Wanganui, New Zealand.

Wanganui city takes its name from the mighty Wanganui River, which flows along the foot of the main street, Victoria Avenue.

Brass bands have always had a presence in the town, right from the very earliest days of European settlement in the area.

During the New Zealand Land Wars of 1845-1872, a military garrison was established in the town of Wanganui, in common with many other New Zealand towns of the time and the Wanganui Garrison Band was quickly formed to serve the needs of music for the military and local citizens.

Later, Queen Alexandra's Own Band was formed and the two bands served the local community with pride and distinction for some 120 years before finally amalgamating together in 2000.

Both bands have very proud records in the competion arena, stretching back over the whole period of their existence, both for soloists and collective band playing.

The most recent national success has been in the 2009 New Zealand Brass Band Championships, where we won the B Grade title. This success follows a break of 3 years since our last performance on the national competition stage. It is a very proud moment for us after some years of challenging times.

Brass Wanganui looks forward with confidence to being able to continue serving the Wanganui City and District with distinction for many more years to come.
